el/la/lo mejor ([the] best) es el superlativo de bueno/a (good).

El mejor se aplica a sustantivos masculinos. Ejemplos:

• "Este es el mejor coche del mercado" ("This is the best car on the market")
• "Mi dibujo es el mejor" ("Mi drawing is the best")
• "Has llegado en el mejor momento" ("You've arrived in the best moment")
• "Aquí están los mejores restaurantes de toda la ciudad" ("Here are the best restaurants in the whole city")

La mejor se aplica a sustantivos femeninos. Ejemplos:

• "Es la mejor historia que he oído nunca" ("It's the best story I've ever heard")
• "Quiero una lavadora, y quiero la mejor" ("I want a washing-machine, and I want the best")
• "Puede que tus gafas sean las mejores, pero a mí no me gustan" ("Maybe your glasses are the best, but I don't like them")

Lo mejor se aplica a conceptos abstractos. Nunca acompaña a un sustantivo. Ejemplos:

• "Es lo mejor que nos podía haber ocurrido" ("That's the best that could have happened to us")
• "Lo mejor es que avisemos a la policía" ("We'd better call the police")
• "Lo hice lo mejor posible" ("I did it as best I could")

En lugar del artículo determinado el, la puede haber un determinante posesivo (mi, tu, etc.), como en inglés:

• "Hoy has hecho tu mejor actuación" ("Today you did your best performance")
• "La sinceridad es sin duda su mejor cualidad" ("Sincerity is without a doubt his best quality")

Cuidado con la expresión a lo mejor, que significa perhaps, maybe, probably:

• "A lo mejor alguien quiere ir contigo" ("Maybe someone wants to go with you")

Lo mejor applies to abstract concepts. It nevers accompanies a noun. Examples:

• "Es lo mejor que nos podía haber ocurrido" ("That's the best that could have happened to us")
• "Lo mejor es que avisemos a la policía" ("We'd better call the police")
• "Lo hice lo mejor posible" ("I did it as best I could")

Instead of a definite article el, la (the) a possessive adjective can be placed (mi, tu, etc.), as in English:

• "Hoy has hecho tu mejor actuación" ("Today you did your best performance")
• "La sinceridad es sin duda su mejor cualidad" ("Sincerity is without a doubt his best quality")

Watch out the expression a lo mejor, meaning perhaps, maybe, probably:

• "A lo mejor alguien quiere ir contigo" ("Maybe someone wants to go with you")
